This piece is inspired by a friend who escaped violent abuse as a young kid, became orphaned, and proceeded to turn his life around through a series of long struggles. It symbolizes the moment when he exclaimed, “not like them” as he collapsed in the desert after running away and deciding to not live like those who abused him. Spitting out the blood is symbolic of getting rid of the abuse in a final gesture of resolve.
